Last year’s community survey provided us with some areas to focus on for our 2022-23 school year. Attached to this one call email are the MMS Building Goals using data from that survey. Please take a moment to review the power-point presentation. Our objective was to provide a school where students are safe, we communicate well with our stakeholders, and we work on rebuilding our community after a rough couple of years. Please email me if you have any questions.

This year at MMS we are excited to announce in an attempt to be a safer place to send your students we have installed Vape Detectors in each bathroom and locker room at MMS. Over the last couple of years we have seen a steady increase in the amount of students who are bringing vapes to school and vaping in the bathrooms. Our vape detectors are designed to detect Vape Smoke, THC Smoke, loud aggressive noises, and tampering with the ceiling. Students who are caught in possession of a vape or vaping will be suspended from school and assigned a Vape Education course. We also see a lot of horseplay in our bathrooms that will result in Community Service and potential further consequences depending on the severity. My hope is that you’ll talk with your student before school starts about making sure when they go in the bathroom they go in and use the facilities as they are intended and then make their way out
At the middle school most of our students have cell phones and bring them to school. MMS’s device policy is that students are required to keep their cell phones in their locker. If a student does not have their phone in their locker the first time they are warned, the device confiscated and given their cell phone back at the end of the day, the second and every referral after is a parent pick up with a potential for other consequences. A lot of our students also wear apple watches or other smart watches. At this time students are allowed to wear their smart watches but they must be using them appropriately as time pieces. If a student is not using their watch appropriately it would fall under the electronic device policy/consequences mentioned above. If you have any questions feel free to email at kthomas@miamisburg.k12.oh.us.

As you are preparing your middle school student’s back to school outfits I wanted to draw an awareness to the dress code at MMS. At the middle school we have created a dress code with safety, respect, and responsibility in mind and is conducive to the educational process. Student’s shirts have to have a sleeve much like a short sleeved shirt and cover all parts of the upper body. Students' shorts or skirts must be at fingertip length. Pants/slacks are to be worn at or above the hips and properly fastened. Pants/slacks may have holes in them, only in areas that are not indecent to include below the finger tip. I know it’s not really the season but last year one of our issues was hoods on hoodies. Students are allowed to wear hoodies but are not permitted to wear their hood up during the school day. Our building is typically cold so I would encourage students to dress for a cold building rather than the actual outside temperature. I am attaching our dress code policy to the one call email. Please take a moment to review with your student before school starts.
This year at MMS we are excited to announce a new MMS Volunteer Program to engage our parents and community in the building. If you have an hour or two or more you’d like to donate to MMS on a daily or weekly basis to be a friendly face, helping hand, or resource for staff / students I would encourage you to apply for our MMS Volunteer Program. Volunteers will need to like to engage with middle schoolers and staff members. Volunteers can be parents, siblings, grandparents, community members etc and do not need to have any type of license or specific education. Volunteers will be background checked and trained before working with / at MMS. Submit if you are interested and I’ll be reaching out. Check out the One Call email or website for the application and program outline.
REVISED IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING SCHOOL MEALS
At MMS we will continue to be a 1:1 building with every student who is interested being able to take home a device. If you are a 7th or 8th grader you took this device home with you at the end of last year. You’ll need to be sure to bring this back with you to school every day. If your device incurred damages this summer you’ll need to turn it into the library for repairs. If your student had damages and submitted for repair they’ll be given a letter with the damages price menu. Before we can resubmit the device this fee will need to be paid. Your sixth grade student will receive a form either at their building or on the first couple days of school. The form asks you to either give permission for your student to receive a device, and be charged a $25 fee, or decline this device at which point we’ll be sure to remove the $25 fee. 6th grade students will receive their devices the first week of school as long as they have completed their device agreement. Contact the middle school or email me at kthomas@miamisburg.k12.oh.us if you have any questions.
